In Essex County lies the small town of Andover, Massachusetts.  This town was originally established in 1636 under a different name, Cochichawicke, which was the Native American name for the local waterway, but in 1646, the town was dubbed “Andover” due to the fact that many of the settlers were from England and this was the name of one city in England.  Located a short 23 miles north of Boston, MA, this small town is home to a little over 30,000 residents.  There are many charms to be found in this town and also several interesting facts that started with its inception.  You’ll find homes about with wood shutters and stone fireplaces.

Ever since its very beginning, Andover, MA the manufacturing industry has played a major role in the development and financial success of the town.  Over one hundred years after its establishment, the town started its first powder mill in 1775 and manufacturing paper took place a few years later in 1789.  At the start of a new century, numerous wool mills were built that were also found to be highly successful and they worked to contribute to the economy of Andover.  However, nothing lasts forever and while these older forms of manufacturing eventually died out, many other types of manufacturing processes would take over and allow this small town to continue attracting numerous different types of modern industries.

Aside from the business aspects of Andover, Massachusetts is the academic portion.  In this town lies one of the most esteemed independent secondary preparatory schools in the United States called the Phillips Academy.  Started in 1770 by Samuel Phillips, there are 1100 hard working students currently attending.  Some of the most famous individuals to graduate from these halls include former President George Bush, pediatrician doctors Dr. Benjamin Spock, former Yale President and Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti, and former Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.  Andover has been dubbed by some as the “Home of America” and the famous patriotic song America was actually written by Samuel Francis Smith while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary.

Aside from the numerous interesting historical facts that can be found through this small town, there are also many activities that take place and a lot of tourists love escaping from life and retreating to Andover.  This town presents a wide array cdn of art performances, museums, and is rich in history with numerous sites to visit.  Some of the nearby venues have baseball and hockey, and for those who enjoy being outside under the sun, there are many places to explore whether it is hiking across the rich terrain, skiing among the numerous trails that wind their way around conservation lands, spending time on a world class golf course, or basking next to the Shawsheen River.  The nearby forest offers 3,000 acres of land for fishing, camping, biking, horseback riding, and many, many other activities.

There is much more than the rich environment found in Andover, MA and you will also enjoy the fact that it is so conveniently located close to Boston.  The Saints Memorial Medical Center is nearby if you unfortunately need urgent care during your visit.  If you are having fun under the sun, but you might be better off spray tanning than  in the outdoors but are ready to experience some city life, Boston is home to well over 12 million annual visitors and is known for its fabulous night life, cultural facilities, top notch educational institutions, and also many other activities that can only be found in the forefront of history known as Boston.  While you’re there, take some pictures and you might even be able to turn those photos to canvas.
